Prayer.
Lord Jesus Christ, when you came among us, you proclaimed the kingdom of God in villages, towns, and lonely places: Grant that your presence and power may be known throughout this land. Have mercy upon all of us who live and work in rural areas, especially Greenville; and grant that all the people of our nation may give thanks to you for food and drink and all other bodily necessities of life, respect those who labor to produce them, and honor the land and the water from which these good things come. All this we ask in your holy Name. Amen. (BCP 825, For Towns and Rural Areas)
News.
-Join us for worship at St. Paul’s this Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost, August 15, at 11a. Pastor Ben will be presiding at Table and Elizabeth Ahern will be preaching the Word. Starting this Sunday, we will hold our Sunday Worship service in the north parking lot alongside the church building for the next several weeks due to the rise of the Covid variant in our community. We strongly encourage all those who are able to join us outside for the service. Please bring your own lawn/folding chairs.
For those in our community who need to be indoors for health reasons (heat or cold), we will be streaming the service in the sanctuary.
-As the fall semester begins at GU, we want to show our gratitude and appreciation to Cooper Majers and Chloe Bauder for their terrific leadership at St. Paul’s this summer! Claire Krober will be returning as our worship pastor next week. If you or someone you know might be interested in serving as St. Paul’s next sexton, please contact Pastor Ben at [email protected]
-Prayer focus: Wayne Harrison; Ann Z. (senior); Nancy Long, St. Paul’s Congregational Grant.
-Pastoral care. If you would like to receive a visit or call from one of our pastoral staff, contact Pastor Judy at 618.514-7457 or email her at [email protected]
-Christian education. We will be pausing for the summer. Be on the lookout for opportunities from Pastor Bob to speak into Christian education at St. Paul’s or participate in our congregational grant with the Henry Center and Templeton Foundation.
-Bible study at GU is currently on hold; we are excited the group continues to grow. A weekly meeting time has not been set yet. Stay tuned as things progress.
-We celebrate the continued work of our companionship ministry and the meaningful impact this ministry has on the Greenville community. If you would like to be trained for companionship ministry, contact Jim Zahniser at [email protected]
-St. Paul’s continues to offer Morning Prayer via zoom Tuesday-Thursdays at 8a (note the time change). Here’s the zoom link: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/7875276187
-Supporting mental health. Carrie Ackerman, MSW, is offering one pro bono session a week for a community member in need. Contact Carrie for more information: [email protected].
Reflection.
Today’s prayer reminds us that Jesus visited and lived in towns just like ours. Small towns can be lonely places, especially towns like Greenville where much of our community vacations or goes home for the summer in the case of our university students. But with each new fall, we welcome the opportunity to come back together as we proclaim with our lips and our lives the kingdom of God in Greenville as we welcome Jesus into our homes and lives.
In this next season of life together with St. Paul’s, we are committed to coming together to be a witness to the difference that Christ makes for how we live together. Whether pressed by a global pandemic or faced with poverty in our town, we want to be a community that attends to the bodily necessities of our neighbors because we know that God came to save the whole of us – body, mind, and spirit. Thanks be to God who has given us everything we need to be God’s friends and companions with one another.
As the summer comes to an end and we welcome new people and a new season in our life together, may we celebrate what Christ makes possible as we live into God’s kingdom.
Benediction.
May we love God and our neighbor so well that our witness in this town becomes a thing of beauty in itself.
